Environmental Commitment
In line with our multi-year funding from the City of Edinburgh Council (CEC), Capital Theatres has joined the city compact to target carbon net zero by 2030. As Scotland’s capital and economic centre, we want to play our part in making sure that a cleaner, greener and fairer future lies at the heart of everyone’s visit to our city and our venues.
Raising the curtain on our green improvements.
We still have a lot to do, but recently we have implemented a range of initiatives including:
Energy Efficiency
- Changing to a renewable energy supplier for our electricity
- Changing our auditorium lights to LEDs
Waste Reduction
- Upgrading taps with motion sensors to minimize water wastage
- Installing hand dryers to reduce waste paper
- Reducing the quantity of printed materials produced and used for marketing
- Donating office and stage equipment to be reused where possible
Sustainable Sourcing
- Using local suppliers for our café and for catering events
Eco-Friendly Initiatives
- Stopping the sale of plastic toys at our pantomime
- Introducing the cycle to work scheme
Staff Engagement and Education
- Setting up a Green Team working group to meet regularly to discuss and look for ways to operate in a more sustainable way
- Providing Carbon Literacy training to some of our staff
- We have signed up to the Theatre Green Book
Carbon Management Plan
Our Carbon Management plan takes an in-depth approach to improving our environmental sustainability and measuring the outcomes of its success. We examine the sources of current carbon emissions, focusing on reducing the most significant areas of carbon emissions. We follow the Theatre Green Book which is designed to help theatres and touring companies reduce their carbon footprint, mitigate climate change impacts, protect natural resources, and promote sustainable practices throughout our buildings. We are committed to taking all necessary steps towards achieving a sustainable and resilient organisation.
