King’s Update: Striking New Architectural Features
The first months of 2025 have seen dramatic changes at the King’s, as the final stages of demolition near completion and new features take shape throughout the building.
Construction of our brand-new street level café is one step closer. Steelwork has been installed to support a new opening in the existing wall, which will eventually lead into the new single-story extension.
Up on the roof, the external rendering on the North and East elevations has been finished, which will allow for the full removal of the northeast scaffolding throughout March. Inside the fly tower, the construction of the new walkways is almost complete and the internal scaffolding has been dismantled.

It has been thrilling to witness progress on one of the most striking new architectural features of the King’s – the slot window which runs the full height of the building on the Tarvit Street side. The new window, which has already been installed, will allow natural light to flood the new staircases.

Meanwhile, the auditorium is one step closer to its final form, with rear partition walls nearing completion.

Expert conservation work is underway on John Byrne’s iconic dome painting to ensure it looks it very best when the curtain rises on the King’s once more. You can read more about how we’re restoring this piece of theatrical history here.

2025 is set to be a truly transformative year for the King’s. Stay tuned for further updates as we follow the progress of this landmark redevelopment project.
