A Career in Directing

Sit down with the director of James V: Katherine Orla O'Loughlin as she talks through the responsibilities of the role and her own pathway to directing. Orla, who has featured in The List Hot 100 of Women in the Arts, has a breadth of directorial experience including Enough of Him for the National Theatre of Scotland and The Time Machine for Original Theatre. As artistic director of the Traverse Theatre her credits included the award winning productions: Mouthpiece and What Girls are Made of. A Career in Playwriting

Hear from Scottish playwright Rona Munro on her writing process and the skills needed to find the story you want to tell. Having written extensively for stage, radio, film and television Rona talks about writing the newest of her defining James Plays series James V: Katherine. Rona's other major credits include a stage adaptation of Frankenstein and Captain Corelli's Mandolin as well as presenting work with the Edinburgh International Festival, Royal Shakespeare Company and The National Theatre of Scotland. Rona looks at her artistic beginnings with "play and pretend" games in primary school and the journey of making a living through writing.

A Career in Producing

Listen to Gillian Garrity, part of Scottish production duo Raw Material, co-producers of James V: Katherine with Capital Theatres. Gillian looks at her role as an executive producer and explains her job overseeing all production elements, from commissioning, to the script, to the stage (and finding the money to make it happen!). Gillian began her career in the 1990s at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow and has since gone on to work with many Scottish theatre companies and venues, with projects ranging from international tour management to commissioning and programming.  

A Career in Set & Costume Design

Becky Minto talks through the creative process behind set & costume design. Becky trained in Theatre Design at The Welsh College of Music and Drama and teaches part-time on the Performance Costume Degree/MFA course at Edinburgh College of Art. Listen as she talks through her 25 years as a set and costume designer where she's created over 100 productions for companies across Scotland, the UK and Europe.

A Career in Sound Design

Danny Krass sits down to discuss the every day work of sound design and composition, talking through his career and the unique setup of James V: Katherine. Danny, originally from Australia, has been living and working as a composer and sound designer in Scotland since 2007. His theatrical credits include The Artist Man and the Mother Woman and Quiz Show at the Traverse Theatre. Danny explains his non-traditional route from a degree in anthropology to learning practical sound design skills online.
