‘Practically perfect in every way’: positioning Mary Poppins in British cinema and popular culture
Whilst American-funded and produced, Mary Poppins is deeply rooted in British film culture and within the traditions of the British stage and music hall. The appeal of the film lies not simply in the Oscar-winning turn of Julie Andrews, the irresistible songs, or the memorable accent of Dick Van Dyke but also in the supporting British cast, the vivid evocation of Edwardian London and the bittersweet nature of childhood. This talk will situate the film within the 1960s British cinematic landscape, explore the stardom at work in the film, and consider the film’s legacy.
